This training is an excellent opportunity to learn about the Australian Stock exchange, the Stockbrokers, types of Investments, Clearing & Settlements and Trading Concepts. You will not only learn about its history and how it works, but you will also learn how GBST fits into this world, its origins, through to the success it has today.
Get to know the programs you will be working to produce at GBST. GBST Shares TM, GBST Margin Lending TM, GBST Composer TM, and GBST DCA TM are just a few of the training courses which are available. These training courses familiarise you with the current functionality provided by these key applications and how they work in the broker world.
An architectural overview training session provides a look into the nuts and bolts of the applications produced at GBST and how they link to market both nationally and globally. Learn how and why applications were developed at GBST, and how these applications provide customers with the best possible product with the many different interfaces and modules available to tailor to their business needs.
External training provided. Specific language will be dependent on the area of the business that you are joining.
GBST meets it promise to expand your knowledge base, providing external programming language training, specific to the area of business that you are joining. You will also receive mentoring from GBST staff, learning the tools available and process involved with the development of software at GBST.
Use of internal tools, our processes/methodology
Learn about GBST's internal tools. These include both locally developed applications specific to the requirements of GBST staff but also utilising some of the leading workplace applications for Project Management and Development. Also get to know the process and methodology involved in project management at GBST.
After your initial training is complete you will commence rotations through various areas. These rotations will gain an understanding of how we do business and will give you the opportunity to experience numerous roles with a view to developing your career in one of those areas.
The rotations are split into primary and secondary areas. These are:
Working in the Implementation Team will give you a great overview of GBST. Build an understanding of how GBST delivers software to site and then how this software is then configured and activated. You will communicate with clients, implementing new customer sites, while updating existing sites with the various components and modules available to customers.
View and be involved with the support cycle at GBST first hand, from the point an incident is raised through to the resolution. You will develop an understanding of how to resolve complex system problems using the tools specific to the languages that GBST uses. Develop a deeper understanding of how products are constructed and the requirements of each customer.
This rotation takes the step from support development to a well-oiled team that brings some of the bigger projects at GBST to a successful completion. Learn the GBST software development lifecycle for projects and maintenance software, and learn the aspects that increase the quality of the delivered software.
A rotation in GBST's Architecture Team will build your understanding of how the systems developed are architected. You will develop an appreciation for the security, performance and robustness requirements that are inherent in GBST's software. Review technologies, assist with technology strategy and provide pre-sales support to business development staff.
The Corporate Systems Team provides support and systems engineering services for GBST's internal Microsoft environment and communications infrastructure.
The UNIX and DBA Team at GBST provide support and systems engineering services for GBST's internal UNIX environment and GBST's clients.
The Human Resources team focuses on running GBST smoothly. A rotation in this department would see you promoting GBST, getting involved with company policy and employment while building a strong foundation for a healthy team environment and encouraging personal development.
The Production Development team makes sure that GBST's products meet the business needs of our customers. Be involved in making sure products are forward looking, that they will become and remain superior to all competitor products, all the while expanding the products market to new customers, market sectors and geographical locations.

When did you join GBST?
January 1995. I spent 11 years at GBST before moving on to other roles with Suncorp and RSA Security. I re-joined in 2008.
What's involved in your day to day work?
I manage approximately 70 staff who design, build and support Australia's best back office systems for stockbrokers and margin lenders.
What do you like most about working for GBST?
The work we do has a real impact on the efficiency of our clients. It's very easy to see the benefits that our systems provide. We have some fantastic staff who are keen to deliver great quality software, and have fun in the process.
What interesting projects have you been involved in?
I was involved in helping GBST deliver Australia's first online trading system. I have participated in a research project where GBST investigated new models for electronic trading. This enabled me to work towards the completion of my PhD. I'm currently involved in bringing a technology that we acquired in late 2008 to Australia.
What has GBST done to help develop your career?
GBST has always provided me with the opportunity to take my career to the next step. In conjunction with that I've received the necessary training and support to take on the new roles.

What's involved in your day to day work?
I am part of the team that looks at new developments and future product direction. In addition to this, I look after the pre-sales activities and work with many of our third party vendors.
What do you like most about working for GBST?
I've worked for the Wealth Management division of GBST for over ten years. Very early on in my career I was entrusted with a high level of responsibility which continues to motivate me today. Furthermore, the people I work with have been great. They have really helped me in my own personal development and progress.
What interesting projects have you been involved in?
I am most interested in projects that provide new challenges and opportunities to learn. The many projects that I've been involved with at GBST over the past 10 year have certainly provided me with both.
What has GBST done to help develop your career?
During my time at GBST I have had the opportunity to get involved in a variety of different roles and activities and have been supported by those around me. This breath of experience and supportive environment has allowed me to excel in my career.
When did you join GBST?
While I was at University I had 6 weeks work experience, which ended in Sept 06, and in Feb 07 I began part time while finishing my last semester at University. I think it was about Nov 07 that I began full time and have been here ever since.
What's involved in your day to day work?
I'm a Coldfusion and .NET developer so I tend to do a bit of everything. Day to day involves getting briefs from the Project Managers/Senior Developers before getting started on some work. Having been here a little while now I tend to take a few questions from some of the newer people on how to do certain HTML/CSS/Coldfusion type things, so I try to help out there where I can.
What do you like most about working for GBST?
The people and the environment I'm in at the moment. It's pretty laid back but when there's work that needs doing there's plenty of people that put their hand up and get down to it.
What interesting projects have you been involved in?
EB Games, Signet, Tourism Sunshine Coast, and their Corporate and Convention Bureau sites to name a few.
What has GBST done to help develop your career?
Since joining GBST I've learned quite a lot of Coldfusion and .NET as well as improving my CSS skills, allowing me to work on some of the more involving and challenging projects that we tend to get.

What's involved in your day to day work?
As part of the project team, I am involved in the development of new products in both the Front and Back office space and enhancements to our existing flagship applications.
What do you like most about working for GBST?
One of the things I like the most about GBST is its people. I am a member of a team of professional and dedicated people. There is a real culture of ownership and striving to the best possible outcome. GBST manages to have a relaxed and friendly working environment whilst maintaining professional industry standards.
What interesting projects have you been involved in?
During that time I have been involved in many interesting and challenging projects. GBST invests a lot of money into research and development which means that its employees can gain experience in the latest technologies.
What has GBST done to help develop your career?
Joining as a graduate, I did not expect to stay for 10+ years, but GBST has always been flexible to meet my changing needs both as a professional and as an individual. Over the years I have changed between part and full time work depending on the situation of my family without compromising my position in the company. Testimony to GBST, is the longevity and loyalty of its current employees, many of whom started as graduates as well.

What's involved in your day to day work?
As a graduate, I have been able to rotate through the different areas of GBST. I worked in the Implementation and UNIX teams, and did a rotation in Human Resources and Corporate Systems. At the moment I am working as a Java and Business Intelligence Software developer.
What do you like most about working for GBST?
The people you work with are fantastic, the work you get to do is new and exciting. There are always opportunities to keep learning and better yourself, as well as getting involved with the many GBST social clubs.
What interesting projects have you been involved in?
I am currently involved in the various stages of development of the new GBST FrontOffice Suite with is providing a Front Office solution to GBST's legacy product Shares. This has including the development, testing, architecture and sales. One of the bigger jobs I was involved with was the migration and implementation of GBST customers to a new NZ clearing and settlement system.
What has GBST done to help develop your career?
From day one I have had a mentor guiding me with my decisions. I have been able to get a taste of each area of the company and get to be involved with all the different stages of software development. If there is anything that I feel I need to get more training or experience with, GBST are always more than happy to help me get what I need.
